Roomiematch.com is an US-based in depth and innovative matching service that uses a sophisticated Q&A survey to find  room mates who will most suit your personality and life ambitions. Before you can even search for profiles you have to “pass the human test” (as we call it). This involves answering a series of questions on what you’re looking for, where, when and with whom. Roomiematch goes in to an admirable level of detail, even down to how often you wash, do the dishes or how you might react to certain events. It sounds intrusive but actually  their questions have a sense of humour whilst still allowing you to answer honestly. There’s no point in lying about your habits or what you expect from others – you have to live with these people! And honesty is something that the site prides itself on. They repeat their mantra that you’ll not be spammed or scammed several times and go through many reasons as to how this is achieved. Primarily, Roomiematch.com makes sure that their system is not fully automated, meaning that human beings check profiles for authenticity. Profiles which remain unused are also deleted on a regular basis, meaning you won’t spend a long time searching through a mass of members.

The reason this site receives a low rating on its “ease of joining” score is partly due to this insistence on authenticity.  Even after the lengthy questionnaire is complete (this takes a good 15-20 minutes if you think properly about each question) you are made to wait for a confirmation from one of the “human beings” to make sure your answers make sense and you don’t sound too manic. After this you will receive matches based on your information. Rather than having you search through profiles they focus on emailing recommendations to you. Once you decide that you’d like to contact a member then you pay for roomiematch.com’s “cheap” service (as they call it). The paid service costs $19.95 a year and means that you can contact any members and have them respond, whether or not they have paid for the service themselves. We’d have preferred a shorter length of contract (perhaps 3 or 6 months) for a smaller payout, but overall it’s not a bad deal to find roommates who you are more likely to click with. The FAQ section  isn’t very large but this is probably a reflection of the fact that you don’t interact with this site as much as you might with other roommate websites. If problems persist with your account then you can email their help team.

Overall Roomiematch.com offers a quality service at a fair price. Its survey system is well constructed and covers all of the key concerns people tend to have about moving in with people they’ve not met before. It’s a safe and secure way of trying to ensure you live with people who have made an effort to house hunt, rather than just going for the first thing that comes along. If you’ve $20 to spend then Roomiematch.com is a strong candidate.
