If you’re looking to place or respond to free ads in the hope of finding a room or roommate in the US then Roommateclick.com is the place to be.

You don't have to register to browse its ads, which is a timesaver if you want to quickly look at the most recent additions and make a few notes. If you want to call or contact someone about an advert then you don’t necessarily need to join up either, though placing your own advert will mean that you will receive matching properties / people in email alerts. Roommateclick is flexible though, and if you don’t want to receive email updates (perhaps you’d rather just log on now and then at your own convenience) then email alerts can be switched off at any time.

Placing an ad is simply a case of putting in the destination, price range and time of occupancy you require. Free ads does the rest. You can upload several photos to help promote a room or even yourself, which is better than many sites (which frequently only allow one photo). Adverts are a little short most of the time, and it would be good if Roommateclick.com provided the means to select which appliances and features a property had so that you could make more specific choices when searching, or so that their matches were more in depth. For the most part, though, you can cover these sorts of issues when contacting a roommate or landlord.

Roommateclick recommends that you include your phone number in an advert, which will gain your advert more interest and encourage people to contact you. This could be an issue for people who are cautious about handing out their phone number to the public realm, though you can also delete your ad at any time to prevent misuse after the room has been let, or you’ve found the room you were after.

There’s no real interest in matching “people” on the site, which is something of a flaw. It’s all about price, location and duration. Where other sites sometimes have a profiling survey to make sure you’ll match potential roommates, roommateclick doesn’t really bother. As such it is up to you to decide whether or not you’ll get on and whether the move is the best decision. You can read about staying safe  and the FAQ offers tips on approaching people or writing adverts, you can also contact the help team if you have any issues. The help section is particularly well designed with clear sections and an instant messenger service should you need assistance.

There are a few restrictions on the non-upgraded memberships, which mean that you cannot send a message back (other than an automated message which lets them know you have seen theirs). Upgrading is free, though, and doesn’t take very long to complete.  It might be useful if they offered a few more communication tools to its members, such as an instant messenger or even a web cam service so that they could speak as though in person, or view movies of the properties.

Roommateclick.com is a well designed and flexible service with a strong database of members and properties. If you’re not too picky about extra features and just want to contact people who have rooms available (or who want rooms) then this site is a great option.
