Thinking of moving house? Not sure how to find a location that suits your budget or your personal needs? Just looking for someone to move in with you? Roommatelocator.com is here to help with a simple USA-focused system that allows you to select members or properties based on a desired location and price range. A search takes seconds to perform, though you can make an “advanced search” which allows you to specify that you are looking for particular features in accommodation, such as a room which allows smokers or pets. It’s a fine system but we’d like to have seen more options available to make searches, such as wheelchair access, student/professional accommodation or just to filter out any profiles without photos.
When you’ve performed a search you’ll be presented with a gallery of properties or members who match what you’re looking for. You’ll find that many property profiles have a photo attached (though only one and not of a high quality with a maximum upload of 90k) though very few members have added a photo to their profile. The 1-photo limit is offset somewhat by the ability to add youtube links to your profile, which means that you can upload videos to youtube and have a more in depth advert available to your profile. When we searched for a room in a major US city we had a fairly impressive number of results (almost 300), though searching through them is a little troublesome as you can see 12 properties per page but cannot skip through pages, meaning that you must go through every single page of results to reach the end. This is particularly annoying if you decide to change any of the search options and try again because it often means you have to wade through masses of the same profiles. There seems no method to the organisation of the results, either, and you cannot sort them based on price, location or availability. A more intricate search and sort function would allow members to more easily find what they are looking for.
Beyond building a profile for yourself or a property, or making a search for one, there are few other features worth much attention on the site. You can send a message to a landlord or member to ask for more details, though it might be nice to have a webcam option to have a discussion, or even an instant messenger service, rather than a short email-style message. The site is therefore simple, which does make it quite easy to navigate as you’ve few options to choose from. Equally, the sign up process is quick and requires very little information (though this could be a mixed blessing as it means that many profiles lack a useful level of detail). Customer support consists primarily of the ability to send a message to administration/support though they are very blunt about not wanting particular kinds of messages. Otherwise, you can visit the FAQ, which is so short that it’s almost pointless.
Roommatelocator.com is a simple site which may help you to find a roommate or property in a specific area and to a set budget. But there’s little else to it and generally there is a feeling that more information would be helpful in pointing members in the right direction. It’s a case of “it does what it says on the tin”, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At the moment it's free but they are looking to add an upgrade option in the near future, the specifics of which are not yet available at the time we visited. Nevertheless, Roommatelocator.com is certainly worth a quick search, you never know who or what you’ll find! Good hunting.
